Wat Chalong
Temples of Thailand
Wat Chalong, also known as Wat Chaiyathararam, is Phuket’s largest, most visited temple. Built in the early 19th century, locals and Thai tourists have marvelled its opulence for centuries. This special temple honours the monks who led the Chalong people during the 1876 Chinese rebellion and tells stories of caring for them with herbal medicine. A significant part of Thai history, Wat Chalong honours Buddha with paintings depicting his life that adorn the walls and ceilings, along with ornate golden statues and a fragment of his bone. The temple is three floors and visitors can climb to its peak for a spectacular panoramic view of the temple grounds, as well as view the fragment of Buddha’s bone up close from its glass display.
A space for contemplation, enlightenment and reverence for Buddha, Wat Chalong in Phuket is an unmissable temple to visit.
