How to Shop and Bargain Like a Pro
Take on the Thai markets
Discover the sights and sounds of Thailand’s iconic markets. A world full of neon lights, streamers, delicious smells, vibrant colours and lively sounds awaits. Within the hustle and bustle you will find an incredible number of vendors selling all kinds of things from fresh flowers to decadent street food, clothing, handmade crafts and so much more. But you’ll need to be savvy to navigate the bounds of the Thailand markets, and here are some of our favourite tips and tricks.
Be prepared
While it’s tempting to prepare for an aesthetically pleasing Instagram photo in your cutest heels and gorgeous dress, keep in mind that temperatures will be hot and the grounds will be expansive so swap out the heels for some cute and comfy sneakers, light and breathable clothing and a backpack to hold your purchases. Stay hydrated by bringing a water bottle and even some wet wipes to refresh before you scarf those moreish street foods. Learn the basic phrases before you visit, the locals do notice and appreciate the effort, and it could just score you a better deal. For instance, ‘peng mak’ means ‘too expensive’ and ‘lot dai mai’ means ‘can you give a discount? There are also offline currency conversion apps you can download to keep track of your bargains in real-time.

Bring your best self
Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles and it’s important to match that positive energy. The locals are warm and welcoming, so your smile can be your best bargaining tool, and complaints will get you nowhere. Be cautious of vendors who may use emotional persuasion to try and make more money from unsuspecting tourists.

Master the art of bargaining
Not a fan of haggling? Be ready to pay almost double for that beautiful silk scarf or handmade trinket. Think of bargaining as a fun game, the key rules – never accept the first price, start your offer around 40% less than what’s asked before working your way up and don’t be afraid to use the walk-away tactic. Feigning interest can be vital in reducing that price and they’ll almost always call you back. Making more than one purchase will also help score you a bigger discount so team up with a friend to maximise your deals.

Shop around
Before you commit to your unique handbag or rare artwork, make sure it doesn’t have an identical twin a few stalls ahead. This can be common, so take your time to browse and get an idea of what prices are like, observing the locals. Thailand is a shopping paradise and whether you’re at a small tourist trade boutique or a huge night market, you never know what might be around the corner. Experience a piece of history with unique local finds at areas like Phuket Old Town, where you’ll find high-quality fashion and antiques, unlike the run-of-the-mill items you’d find at a mall. Stop in at OTOP Patong Beach for a mix of traditional handmade items, textiles, designer knockoffs and flavourful street food.
