Wat Arun, Temple of Dawn
Temple of Dawn
Wat Arun, otherwise known as Temple of Dawn is an ancient, ornate structure built in Bangkok, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. Now one of Bangkok’s most recognisable landmarks, Wat Arun was once a functioning Buddhist temple. Built in the 1600’s, the Temple of Dawn has since undergone major restoration and development in the 18 and 1900s. The porcelain encrusted, stone temple is a stunningly intricate piece of architecture and tells the historical stories of reign and abandonment. The name ‘Temple of Dawn’ was given by King Taksin in the 1700s after he escaped the fall of Ayutthaya to a Burmese invasion. He reached the temple at the break of dawn, marking the moment with its new name.
